Sing Up Rodney

Sing Up Rodney – Goodbye Winter, Hello Spring! Community event 2017. Sing Up Rodney became part of the Trust in 2018..

Our Groups

Sing Up Rodney groups offer community music therapy, with a focus on singing, communication, friendship and fun. Our groups are open to older adults, people with communication difficulties (affecting voice, speech, language and/or memory) resulting from a neurological condition (e.g. stroke, Parkinson’s, dementia or brain injury) and anyone looking for a supportive daytime group. Partner/carer participation and volunteer applications are welcome.

Sing Up Rodney meets on Thursday mornings, 10:30am-12:30pm in Warkworth Methodist Church Hall (first week of the month, not January) and other term-time Thursdays at the Ōrewa Sea Scout Hall. You can opt to attend Ōrewa or Warkworth or both.

Our programme includes warm-ups and exercises to support voice care and maximisation of communication skills, and a wide variety of songs catering to members’ musical interests. We sometimes play percussion instruments, and we enjoy relaxed conversation over morning tea.

Our groups are led by Alison Talmage, Registered Music Therapist / Teacher, and occasionally by a locum Registered Music Therapist. Registered Music Therapists hold a Master of Music Therapy degree, are registered with the NZ Music Therapy Registration Board, and are committed to a professional Code of Ethics, regular clinical supervision, and ongoing professional development. Music Therapy NZ (a member and advocacy organisation) is a member of Allied Health New Zealand (AHANZ).

The Story of Sing Up Rodney

Feb 2017 Sing Up Rodney was established in Silverdale by registered music therapist, Alison Talmage, with seed funding from Music Therapy New Zealand. This initiative followed requests from local people who had previously belonged to the CeleBRation Choir (at the University of Auckland’s Centre for Brain Research) and wanted a local singing group.

Feb 2018 Sing Up Rodney offered monthly sessions in Warkworth. We acknowledge the support of the late Linda Wall for this initiative, and the Rev Simon Williams and Peggy Nichols in enabling us to use the Warkworth Methodist Church Hall.

Oct 2018 Sing Up Rodney became part of the new Kahikatea Music Therapy and Community Arts Trust (a charitable Trust, reference no CC56392).

Sept 2019 Sing Up Rodney (Ōrewa) moved to a new venue, Õrewa Sea Scout Hall.
We love meeting by the sea!

2020-now Our sessions have been irregular due to the pandemic lockdowns. Our participants have so far opted not to meet on line, and we just hold sessions during Alert Level 1.

Future Plans

We hope to offer other groups in the future, and can also provide a quote for in-house services for retirement villages, care homes and other organisations.
We are seeking further funding, grants and sponsorship to extend our work and be financially sustainable.

Support Us!

Special thanks to our individual donors and grant providers. Grants and donations help us to keep participant fees low. We welcome all donations and sponsorship inquiries.
